At least 3 cases of campus sexual assault in Birmingham every year, FOI data shows

The West Midlands police recorded 21 instances of sexual assaults on campus in Birmingham in the last 5 years.

A Freedom of Information Request was filed in August 2018, seeking the number of rapes and sexual assaults in university campuses in Birmingham in the last 5 years. The request also sought the outcomes of the charges.

According to the response, Birmingham West, Birmingham South and Birmingham East Neighbourhood Policing Unit (NPU) recorded 21 cases of rape and serious sexual assaults from 1 January 2014 to August 2018 on campus.

The response also included outcomes of these crimes where only 1 suspect was charged with the crime in 2014, 2 each in 2015 and 2016, 1 in 2017 and none in 2018.

Several students had also been attacked in Birmingham’s Selly Oak last year when a man wearing a mask sexually assaulted women at night. After Elvis Sidaway was sentenced to 21 years in custody, Detective Sergeant Laura Harrison, from the force’s Public Protection Unit said:

“I am pleased with the sentencing today. Sidaway caused a whole community to question their safety. I hope this will reassure his victims and the wider student population that a dangerous man is no longer a threat to them.

“We worked in close partnership with the university and the local authority to ensure everyone was aware of the attacks and what we were doing to catch the offender, whilst making sure safety messages were being shared.

“We have since set up a stronger network of information sharing so that we can understand how best to communicate with the student population and work with them to keep them safe.”

However, not all incidents of campus sexual assault are reported to the police. Universities in England are opting to deal with sexual assault cases themselves. Read more about campus sexual assault here.
